Memorial Cup – May 22, 2015

We are under way in Quebec City, and it is time to enjoy the highest level of competition in junior hockey. Throughout the tournament I will share my thoughts on the games, as well as player notes and observations.

Kelowna Rockets vs Quebec Remparts
Final Score: 4-3 Quebec

Some years, the team hosting the Memorial Cup can seem out of place against the three league champions, but not this year. Quebec pushed Rimouski to a double-overtime game 7, falling just short of a QJMHL Championship. They came out looking to send a message in the tournament’s first game, and did just that against a team many consider the favorites.

OHL Awards

The OHL announced their Player award finalists. I will go over each award, list the finalists, choose who I believe should receive the award, and explain why. Note: I am not predicting the winners. I do not vote on these awards and do not have inside information as to who may be most likely to receive them. I am stating who I feel is most deserving of each award.

The OHL season is over, and it was an interesting one

All eyes were on the most promising prospect since at least Sidney Crosby. Connor Mcdavid did not disappoint, producing at over 2.5 points per game. His ability to take over a game is unmatched by his peers.

The scoring race came down to the wire, and it happened to be between two draft eligible players. Dylan Strome offered a sensational performance to clinch the title in the last game of the season, vs Niagara. Mitch Marner finished a close second, actually producing at a slightly greater pace than Strome.

Now it is time to look ahead to the playoffs. I will go over each series, what to look for, players to watch, and predict the outcome.

Time to preview the Western Conference OHL Playoffs

(1) Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds vs (8) Saginaw Spirit

Saginaw is not a bad team, they have good young goaltending and play hard, but the Greyhounds are an absolute powerhouse. Their depth up front is unmatched, to the point that their third line would be a first line in a lot of CHL teams. In Deangelo and Nurse, they get the best offensive defenceman and one of the best all situation defender in the OHL.

Good day! Thank you for accessing Focused Scouting

I should start by introducing myself.

I am an independent hockey scout, based out of St. Catharines, Ontario. From a young age, I have had a passion for hockey, which never went away. I have always appreciated the sport, whether it is at the professional or amateur level. The management aspect of the sport has always been just as interesting as the games themselves.

I am currently studying Sport Management at Brock University. I previously aspired to a career in policing and graduated from the Police Foundations program at St-Lawrence College. After being unsuccessful in my attempts to begin a career in the field, I decided to follow my passion and begin making my mark in the hockey community.
